In the competitive landscape of Utah’s amateur MMA scene, few fighters have exploded onto the radar quite like Talon Carvalho. The Salt Lake City-based prospect, fighting out of The Pit SLC under the guidance of UFC and PFL veteran Ramsey Nijem, has rapidly established himself as one of the state’s most exciting talents. With a current amateur record of 7-3, a perfect finish rate in his early career, and the Fierce Fighting Championship (FFC) featherweight title currently around his waist, Carvalho is the definition of an up-and-coming force worth watching closely.

The Athletic Foundation

Carvalho didn’t arrive in MMA as a lifelong martial artist. A multi-sport standout who played football, basketball, baseball, and soccer throughout his youth while also running track in high school, he brings the kind of natural athleticism, coordination, and explosiveness that translates beautifully inside the cage. His family background in CrossFit further sharpened his work ethic and understanding of movement. When he walked into The Pit SLC and began training seriously in early 2023, the results came fast.Just months into his training, Carvalho accepted a short-notice debut on May 13, 2023, at Fierce Challenger Series 5. He stopped Chandler Stone via TKO in the first round. Less than six weeks later, he traveled to Idaho Falls and needed only 21 seconds to TKO Dustin Jones at Fierce FC 26. A third consecutive first-round finish followed against Moises Oslin in November 2023. Suddenly, Utah had a new name to watch.

Climbing the Ranks and Capturing Gold

Carvalho’s path has not been without tests. He fell short in a vacant lightweight title bout against Ammon Garcia via second-round triangle choke in February 2024, then bounced back to capture the FFC lightweight championship with a first-round KO of Tyler Hardin in August 2024. A competitive split-decision loss to Logan Taylor in a five-round war later that year (one of the better fights in recent FFC history) and a unanimous decision setback to David Goldenberg at Tuff-N-Uff 145 in Las Vegas—where Carvalho suffered a broken hand mid-fight yet still went the distance—added valuable experience. The setbacks only fueled his growth. After dropping roughly 10 pounds to move to featherweight, Carvalho returned in March 2026 and claimed the vacant FFC featherweight title with a first-round TKO of Anthenee Strickland-Hicks at Fierce FC 47. He successfully defended that belt on May 16, 2026, at Fierce FC 49 in Farmington, earning a hard-fought unanimous decision over Rey Lee over five rounds. That win pushed his record to 7-3 and solidified him as the top-ranked amateur featherweight in Utah according to regional rankings.

Style and Strengths

Carvalho is an explosive, aggressive striker who finishes fights early when the opportunity arises. Six of his seven victories have come by KO/TKO, most inside the opening round. He pairs that power with improving grappling defense and cardio that has allowed him to go the distance in championship rounds. Training partners and coaches at The Pit SLC—including Nijem and striking specialist Naldo Silva—have helped refine his game into a well-rounded, high-pressure approach that keeps fans on their feet. Beyond the cage, Carvalho has also begun giving back as a youth coach at the gym, helping the next generation develop discipline and fundamentals.
